Historical background

The Department of Surgeryat the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Agricultural University in Olsztyn was established on 2 July 1966. Itsfounder, firsthead and organiser was Associate Professor Wiktor Stefaniak. In the same period of time, a Department of Surgery with an X-ray Laboratory was established within the Clinical Hospital. In 1970 the organisational structure of the university was changed. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicineestablished, amongotherthings, the Institute of Non-infectious Diseases. The Department of Surgery and Radiology was incorporatedintoit. In 1983, Prof. Wiktor Stefaniak retired and Dr. Wojciech Brzeski was appointed head of the Department of Surgery and X-ray, operating within the Department of Internal Medicine. Following the dissolution of the Institute of Non-Communicable Diseases, the Department of Surgery and X-ray became an independent organisational unit of the Faculty. From 1985 to 1987 the Department of Surgery was headed by Prof. Wojciech Empel. In 1987 the management of the Department of Surgery and X-Ray Medicine was entrusted to Prof. Wojciech Brzeski. In 1988, the Department of Surgery was renamed the Department of Surgery and X-rayMedicine with Clinic, which functioned until 2003. In October 2003, within the new organisational structure of the Faculty, the Department of Clinical Sciences was established. It included the Surgery and X-ray Team. As of 01.01.2009, the organisational structure of the Faculty was changed and the Department of Surgery and X-ray with the Clinic was established as an independent unit. From 2009 to 2020, the Head of the Department of Surgery and X-ray Medicine with Clinic was Prof. Zbigniew Adamiak, and from 2020 to the present the Headis Prof. Yauheni Zhalniarovich.
