The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1967, and it is one of the seventeen faculties of the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn. Due to a rapid increase in the number of lecturers and researchers, in 1968, the Faculty was authorized to confer the degree of doctor of veterinary medicine, and in 1971 – the degree of habilitated doctor of veterinary medicine. The Faculty has been accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the Polish Accreditation Committee. The Faculty was a member of the "Healthy Animal – Safe Food" consortium which was granted the status of a Leading National Research Center in the field of veterinary sciences in 2015-2019. The Faculty's scientific performance was highly recognized, and the discipline of veterinary science was awarded category A during the evaluation of scientific disciplines in 2022. The Faculty was placed in the 151-200 category in the 2022 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The Faculty operates modern academic, research, and clinical facilities. It is composed of 16 departments, a Veterinary Clinic for Livestock and Horses, and a Veterinary Polyclinic for Companion Animals. The Faculty employs 18 professors, 31 habilitated doctors (including 23 university professors), 39 scientists with a Ph.D. in veterinary medicine, 7 scientists with a Master's degree in veterinary medicine, and 43 technical support and administration officers. The programs offered in the field of veterinary medicine comply with the quality standards of the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training, Polish and European regulations, including the Polish Qualifications Framework. The graduates have reliable and up-to-date knowledge in the field of veterinary sciences, as well as the necessary skills and qualifications to practice veterinary medicine in a competitive market.

Since 2005, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has been continuously accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) for compliance with quality standards in veterinary education in the European Union.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was visited by the EAEVE Evaluation Team in 2022, and it received accreditation from the European Committee of Veterinary Education (ECOVE) until 2029.


 

The veterinary medicine program offered by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UWM in Olsztyn secured the second place in the 23th Ranking of Academic Subjects Perspektywy 2022.

 


 

The discipline of veterinary science at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was awarded category A in the 2017-2021 evaluation of scientific disciplines. Learn more.


 

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UWM in Olsztyn was a member of the "Healthy Animal – Safe Food" Scientific Consortium which received the status of a Leading National Research Center (LNRC) in the area of agricultural, forestry and veterinary sciences in the field of veterinary sciences in 2015-2019.

Leading National Research Centers are the flagship scientific units in Poland. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was the first faculty of the UWM in Olsztyn to join a consortium with LNRC status.

As part of the "Healthy Animal – Safe Food", the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UWM in Olsztyn partnered with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Jastrzębiec, the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn, and the National Veterinary Research Institute – State Research Institute in Puławy.

Project objective

The main objective of the project is to consolidate the status of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn as a scientific center that conducts innovative, cutting-edge research in basic and applied sciences, promotes research in agricultural and veterinary sciences, and closely collaborates with the leading scientific institutions and organizations in the world, businesses, local governments, and state authorities in the pursuit of these goals.

As part of the project, integrated interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and development efforts will be undertaken in the following areas:

  1. production, processing, storage, and consumption of safe and health-promoting food products, including novel foods,
  2. animal health, in particular in the area of food safety and public health protection,
  3. environmental protection, and
  4. sustainable development at the regional and national level.
