During over 40 years of its history, the Department changed its name several times. During the years 1968-1979, it operated as the Department of Hygiene of Products of Animal Origin, during the years 1979-2003 as the Department of Hygiene of Animal Products. Following the restructuring, in 2003, the Unit of Hygiene of Animal Products was established, which until 2008 was a part of the Department of Veterinary Public Health, and as of 2009, following another restructuring, it operates as the independent Department of Veterinary Public Health. The Department was established in 1968. It was organised and managed by assistant professor dr hab. Zdzisław Zawadzki. He was helped in the organisational efforts by the assistants: Krystyna Karolak, M.Sc., Henryk Grimm, DVM, Ewa Sobańska, M.Sc. and Krzysztof Skorupski, DVM. During the initial years of operation of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Department occupied premises in building 37. The didactic and research activities were carried out at meat processing plants and halls of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry. In 1979, the Department was moved to Kortowo II building 106 (section L). During the years 1974-1976, the lectures in Hygiene of slaughter animals and meat and Hygiene and technology of food of animal origin were delivered by: prof. dr hab. Edmund Prost and prof. dr hab. E. Strzelecki. In 1976, prof. dr hab. Stanisław Kafel became the head of the Department. He developed the research work in food microbiology and made the scientific internships of his assistants in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Denmark possible. In 1990, prof. Kafel retired and dr hab. (as of 2003 prof.) Jan Uradziński has been nominated the head of the Department and served until the end of 2014. Since January 2015 the head of the Department is prof. Joanna Szteyn. Since January 2020 the head of the Department is prof. Beata Wysok.
