The Department of Parasitology and Invasive Diseases with the Invasive Diseases Clinic was established in 1966. Its organizer and first head was Associate Professor Stefan Tarczynski. For the first three years it functioned at the Faculty of Zootechnics. In 1969 it was moved to block 26, where it remained until 1985. Since mid-1985 it has been located in newly constructed buildings in Kortow II. In 1970-1986, the Department was part of the Institute of Infectious and Invasive Diseases as the Department of Parasitology and Invasive Diseases. Since October 1986, it became the Department of Parasitology and Invasive Diseases. After a change in the organizational structure of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. The Department was renamed the Parasitology and Invasive Diseases Team, which was part of the Department of Infectious and Invasive Diseases. After Prof. Dr. Stefan Tarczynski retired in 1989, his alumnus Prof. Dr. Konstantin Romaniuk became head of the Department. As of 01.01.2009, after the retirement of prof. dr. hab. Konstanty Romaniuk, the head became prof. dr. hab. Rajmund Sokół.

Major scientific achievements:

  •     a number of antiparasitic drugs were tested and evaluated, which were put into production in   bioveterinary industry plants;
  •  the pathogenesis was developed and the effects of gza larvae on young cattle were evaluated;
  • a method of valuing losses caused by parasitic infestations has been developed;
  •  methods were developed to control internal and external parasite infestations in industrial cattle, sheep, pig and poultry farms;
  • a drug and methods for controlling Varroa destructor infestations in bees were developed;
  • the effect of Fasciola hepatica invasion on fat metabolism in cattle liver was evaluated;
  •  the effects of Varroa destructor invasion on brood and bees and the lifespan of queens were studied;
  • the toxicity of anti-varroa drugs on bee brood was determined;
  •  selected indicators of non-specific immunity in bees in the course of Varroa destructor invasion were evaluated;
  • the effect of natural gastrointestinal nematode infestation in goats on milk composition and the level of hematological, biochemical indices and non-specific immunity was studied;
  •  methods were developed for the detection, evaluation and course of Nosema ceranae and Nosema apis infection by PCR methods;
  •   a method for assessing and monitoring Dermanyssus gallinae infestation in laying hen farms was developed and patented
  •   a new preparation ApiX was developed for the control of Nosema spp. infections in bee colonies
  •    3 patent certificates have been obtained

The Department (Chair) of Parasitology and Invasive Diseases has had a Scientific Circle of Parasitologists since 1969. Many students have worked in it, and they have independently performed, compiled and presented many original scientific papers at domestic and foreign seminars. The papers presented have also received numerous awards.
