About the Department

The Department / Department / Team / Department of Animal Anatomy has undergone numerous transformations, both in terms of its location in the Faculty structure and its name.

  • In the years 1966–1970 it was the Department of Anima Normal Anatomy, then the Department of Animal Normal Anatomy at the Institute of Basic Veterinary Sciences (1970–1991), then the Department of Animal Anatomy (1991–2003), then the Department of Animal Anatomy at the Department of Functional Morphology (2003–2003). 2008), and since 2008 again the Department of Animal Anatomy.

  • However, the history of the unit dates back to the beginnings of the university. In 1950, at the Faculty of Zootechnics of the University of Agriculture, as a result of the merger of the Departments of Anatomy of the University of Life Sciences in Łódź and Cieszyn, the Department of Domestic Animal Anatomy was established. The head of the Department was DVM  Kazimierz Rzeszowski, who was also the head of the Department of Animal Physiology. After his resignation in 1952, the management was taken over by Prof. Jan Kałużniacki (died in 1955). In the following years, the Department was headed by Prof. Robert Towarnicki. Until 1956, the Department occupied rooms in block 37, together with the Department of Animal Physiology, and from 1956 it had its own exercise room and laboratories in the same building.

  • In the years 1950–1968, the Department of Anatomy was part of the Faculty of Zootechnics. From 1966, it provided teaching services to students of the Branch, and then of the Veterinary Faculty. In 1968, the Department of Animal Anatomy was excluded from the organizational structure of the Faculty of Zootechnics and incorporated into the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. At that time, the Department of Histology and Embryology was established within the Department. On October 3, 1988, the Department was moved to an independent building in Kortowo II. The initiators and originators of the construction of the modern headquarters were Prof. Henryk Janowski, Prof. Kazimierz Markiewicz and Prof. Mirosław Łakomy.

  • From 1977 to 2010, the head of the Department of Functional Morphology and the Animal Anatomy Group was Prof. Mirosław Łakomy, and currently the head of the Department of Animal Anatomy is Prof. Jerzy Kaleczyc.

  • In 2020, the interior of the Department building was subjected to a thorough renovation, as part of which its architecture and room layout were largely reorganized. The Department also gained new equipment for dissecting rooms, laboratories, an operating room and offices.
